The Paper Birch, slender and elegant, with its intense white bark, is visible even in the dark of night. The tough outer wrapping of the tree is the bark from which American Indians fashioned their strong, lightweight bark canoes. These Native Americans, as well as early colonists and European herbalists, all agreed that birch leaves were therapeutic and prescribed the leaves for many disorders. The leaves and twigs of some birches boast a spicy aroma and are used to make scented oil. Because of their singular beauty, the Paper Birch has been designated National Memorial Trees for Mothers and as such are planted on the Capitol grounds in Washington, DC. Michael Michaud Artist Michael Michaud was born in Cleveland, Ohio and raised in Westport, Connecticut. He now resides in Fairfield, Connecticut with his wife Tricia. Starting as an apprentice mold cutter in 1973, Michael soon became a master precious metal caster and moldmaker. In 1976, seeking even more knowledge, Michael moved on to the Rochester Institute of Technology’s prestigious School for American Craftsmen. While studying under esteemed designers Hans Christenson and Gary Griffin, he mastered many of the techniques he uses today to capture the beauty and exquisite detail of nature in metal. Combining his love of nature and exceptional knowledge of precious metal casting and model making, Michael has created wonderful tabletop and giftware items. His exquisite use of layering colors of gold, silver and copper on bronze and pewter, give the Table Art collection an elegant and unique look all its own. “Nature’s creations are the ultimate Art that fills our hearts with joy, warms our souls with promise and fuels our spirits with desire. My true inspiration to reflect this beauty is what my Art is all about.”
