Marquetry Frame of Inlaid Two-Tone Wood - Brown and Tan

This Marquetry Frame is made with the same design technique which started in Egypt over 3000 yrs ago. The inlaying of different precious and exotic materials into wood created decorative and pictorial mosaics. Through the ages, complex designs were created on boxes, tombs and ceremonial regalia. Through the centuries, this craft spread throughout Persia, China, Japan, and in the 16th century to Italy and Germany. These frames, made in Italy today, are an updated expression of that technique. This frame starts with a narrow outer band of dark wood tone, a center band of linear design in light and dark wood tones, and a wide inner band of ribbon grain in a medium wood tone. Backs are finished in velvet. Holds picture measuring 5" x 7".
